Mark Fletcher is an arable farmer in North-West Norfolk. As part of his drive to lower costs of fertilisers and other chemical inputs he uses cover crops across the farm between harvesting one crop and planting another. The rich mix of clover and legumes adds important nutrients into the soil but means Mark has a lot of forage material that needs to be dealt with ahead of planting next year’s arable crop. While Mark has plenty of experience working with livestock it is not something he wants to do as part of his work on the farm and so introducing a grazier who will bring a flock of sheep to graze off the cover crops – and add natural fertiliser into the soil - is an ideal solution. As a member of the North Norfolk Coastal Group, Mark heard about the initiative to support a young grazier into starting their own sheep grazing business and decided to solve his own forage conundrum while helping a young person progress in the sector.

"We could run our own flock on the farm but my focus is on growing arable crops. To be able to use the services of someone like Angus to run sheep across the land, and know that I am supporting someone to progress in the sector is a double win. Our cover crops this year were really good, which is great for the soil health. It did mean, however, that finding a grazier became really important."
